\n\tAfter months of trading insults \u2013 from \u201csick man\u201d and \u201cdrug trafficking leader\u201d on one side, to \u201caccomplice to genocide\u201d with a \u201csenile brain\u201d on the other \u2013 the first meeting between Donald Trump and Gustavo Petro ended with pleasantries, autographs and a Maga cap, The Guardian<\/a> reports.<\/div>\n

\n\tThe Colombian president was received by his US counterpart for a closed-door meeting at the White House, with no press access.<\/div>\n
\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n\tThe encounter had been highly anticipated after months of exchanges between the two in which Trump went as far as to suggest Petro could meet the same fate as the former Venezuelan president Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, captured after the US assault a month ago.<\/div>\n
\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n
\n\t\tAlthough journalists were not allowed to watch or photograph the meeting, as has been the case with visits by other heads of state, both governments posted images on social media, and Petro went further.<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n\t\tThe leftwing Colombian leader shared a photo of a signed copy of Trump\u2019s 1987 book The Art of the Deal, apparently poking fun at reports before the meeting that said he did not speak English and would need an interpreter.<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\u201cWhat was Trump trying to tell me in this dedication? I don\u2019t understand much English,\u201d Petro wrote, alongside a photo showing \u201cYou are great\u201d written above Trump\u2019s autograph.<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n\t\tOn the same social media platform, X, where months earlier he had warned Trump to \u201cdo not wake the jaguar\u201d after the US leader suggested Colombia could be targeted by a US attack, Petro also posted a printed photo he got from Trump, bearing the handwritten message: \u201cGustavo, a great honour. I love Colombia.\u201d<\/div>\n

\n\t\tColombia\u2019s first leftwing president \u2013 who will not run in the May elections because the constitution allows only a single term \u2013 was also photographed leaving the White House wearing a red Maga (Make America Great Again) cap.<\/div>\n

\n\t\tAt a press conference in the Oval Office shortly after the meeting, Trump was asked whether they had reached an agreement on drug trafficking \u2013 Colombia\u2019s position as the world\u2019s largest cocaine producer had been a constant feature of his criticism of Petro \u2013 and said they had.<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\u201cWe got along very well. He and I weren\u2019t exactly the best of friends, but I wasn\u2019t insulted [with Petro\u2019s comments] because I never met him. I didn\u2019t know him at all, and we got along very well,\u201d said the US president.<\/div>\n

\n\t\tIn an interview with Colombia\u2019s Radio Caracol, Petro praised Trump. \u201cThe truth is, I like frank gringos. People who say what they feel. We are undoubtedly very different, but frankness comes first,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n

\n\t\tTrump added that the meeting had been \u201cvery productive\u201d and \u201cfantastic\u201d, and that they would continue working \u201con other issues, including sanctions.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
