\n\tM\u00e9lanie Joly, Canada\u2019s minister of industry, rebuffed President Trump\u2019s warning to rename Lake Ontario \u201cLake America\u201d on Tuesday, saying Canadians will \u201calways call it Lake Ontario,\u201d The Hill reports.<\/div>\n
\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re proud of our Great Lakes,\u201d Joly told reporters during a Tuesday press conference. \u201cWe\u2019ve navigated the St. Lawrence River, the Great Lakes, for thousands of years, and it was part of a foundation of our country. And we\u2019ll just stand up for what we have.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n\tMet with applause, Joly added that while \u201call these shenanigans are happening\u201d \u2014 referring to the president\u2019s ongoing trade war with Canada \u2014 \u201cwe\u2019ll just be smart and we\u2019ll be strategic and we\u2019ll fight back.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n\tTrump\u2019s warning resembles his 2025 executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the \u201cGulf of America\u201d \u2014 a move he described at the time as retaliation against the U.S.\u2019s southern neighbor for \u201callowing millions of people to pour into our country.\u201d\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n\tOn Instagram, the official White House account shared a photo of a U.S. map appearing as though it was built using Legos. Above the Great Lakes region appears a rectangle containing the words \u201cLake America,\u201d while the southern gulf has a similar sign that reads \u201cGulf of America.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n\tThe renewed trade war between Washington and Ottawa began after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney removed negotiators from trade talks with the U.S. over the weekend, causing a new set of tariffs on several Canadian goods to go into effect.<\/div>\n
\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n\tCarney then announced that, starting Sept. 8, Ottawa would enact retaliatory tariffs in response to the U.S.\u2019s 50 percent tariffs. He told reporters that it would \u201cmatch Washington\u2019s new tariffs dollar for dollar in order to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n\tFran\u00e7ois-Philippe Champagne, Canada\u2019s minister of finance, said Tuesday that Canada will impose 15 percent, 25 percent and 50 percent tariffs on $27.6 billion of U.S. goods. Canada is doubling its tariffs on U.S. steel and aluminum to 50 percent \u2014 exactly matching the U.S.\u2019s rate.<\/div>\n
\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n\t\u201cFor each product, our tariff will match the American tariff on the same type of Canadian good,\u201d Champagne said.<\/div>\n
\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n\tOntario Premier Doug Ford preceded Joly in clapping back at Trump\u2019s warning, telling CNN on Tuesday that the threats were a \u201clot of rhetoric.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re strong believers in being a sovereign country, and when President Trump wants to attack our sovereignty and attack our businesses and people in Ontario, I can\u2019t roll over,\u201d he told the network\u2019s Wolf Blitzer. \u201cMy job is to protect Ontario and Canada, and ironically, protecting the American people.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n\tThe Ontario premier called on both sides of the fight to bring down the temperature, telling Blitzer that \u201cthings got a little heated\u201d between him and Trump.\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n\t\u201cLet\u2019s negotiate a fair deal because it\u2019s hurting the U.S. It\u2019s hurting Canada, and we just want to make sure that we have a fair deal,\u201d Ford said.<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
