{"id":90938,"date":"2025-01-03T20:17:27","date_gmt":"2025-01-03T17:17:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/akhaltskha.net\/?p=90938"},"modified":"2025-01-03T20:17:27","modified_gmt":"2025-01-03T17:17:27","slug":"german-and-french-foreign-ministers-in-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/akhaltskha.net\/?p=90938&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"German and French foreign ministers in Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"static-content fs18\">\n<div>\n\tAnnalena Baerbock and Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot hope to show a &#171;new beginning&#187; is possible between Europe and Syria, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2025\/01\/03\/german-and-french-foreign-ministers-in-syria-for-first-official-visit-from-eu-countries\" target=\"_blank\">Euronews<\/a> reports.<\/div>\n<div>\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\n\tThe German and French foreign ministers travelled to Damascus to send what the German minister described as a clear signal that a &#171;new political beginning between Europe and Syria is possible.&#187;<\/div>\n<div>\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\n\tIt is the first official visit to the country by top diplomats from European Union member states since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad.<\/div>\n<div>\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\n\tGermany&#8217;s Annalena Baerbock and France&#8217;s Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot are expected to meet Ahmad al-Sharaa, the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the group that toppled al-Assad, as well as representatives of Syrian civil society on Friday.<\/div>\n<div>\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\n\tBaerbock said there can be a \u201cnew beginning\u201d only if the new Syrian society grants all people, regardless of ethnic or religious background, a place in the political process along with rights and protection.<\/div>\n<div>\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\n\tShe said those rights should not be undermined by an overly long transition to elections or by \u201csteps toward the Islamification of the justice or education system,\u201d that there should be no acts of revenge against entire groups of the population, and that extremism should have no place.<\/div>\n<div>\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\n\t&#171;It is important that I am here with my colleague the French Foreign Minister on behalf of the European Union,&#187; she said while in Damascus, thanking the Syrian White Helmets for their civil work during Al-Assad&#8217;s rule.<\/div>\n<div>\n\t\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\n\tFrench Foreign Minister Barrot began the visit on Friday with a meeting with Christian religious leaders in Damascus.
