Russia can theoretically be excluded from the UNHRC, but not from the Security Council: Nebenzya

Russia’s exclusion from the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) is theoretically possible, but it cannot be excluded from the Security Council. This was stated by the permanent representative of Russia to the world organization Vasily Nebenzya on the air of Channel One, TASS reports.

“The talk that someone can expel us from the Security Council is not based on anything at all, although now nothing can be ruled out, because we live in a world where all the rules have become absolutely irrelevant. Today, the American Ambassador said that the United States will try, will try to exclude Russia from the Human Rights Council. Well, theoretically, this can be done, but it’s impossible to exclude us from the Security Council, because it just became a part of the UN,” he said.

“The United States understands that their hands are short in this sense, so they are trying to reach out to all international bodies from where Russia needs to be removed,” Nebenzya said.

Earlier, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that the US Ambassador would seek the suspension of Russia’s membership in the UNHRC by order of US President Joe Biden. Nebenzia said earlier on Monday that Russia found Western attempts to remove it from the UN Human Rights Council unimaginable. According to him, these attempts are “unprecedented”.
