European Parliament to assess political situation in Azerbaijan

On Tuesday, MEPs will debate with the Commission the political and human rights situation in Azerbaijan, followed by a vote on a resolution on Thursday, European Parliament’s press office reports.

“The debate and resolution will also centre on Azerbaijan’s relations with neighbouring Armenia, with the Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan recently having stated that a peace deal between the two countries could be agreed before Baku hosts the UN’s COP29 climate conference next month.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been embroiled in a decades-long conflict, which culminated in Baku launching a military assault and seizing the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh last year, leading to an exodus of approximately 100 000 ethnic Armenians. At the time, MEPs strongly condemned the unjustified military attack as a gross violation of international law and called for the EU to reassess its relations with Azerbaijan, including in the energy field”, EP press release reads.
