As the security situation in Lebanon deteriorates, US White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reaffirmed the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to prioritizing the safety of Americans in the region. Speaking to reporters, she outlined the proactive steps being taken to assist US citizens seeking to leave or relocate within Lebanon.
“The safety of all Americans is our first priority,” Jean-Pierre stated. She detailed efforts to provide multiple options for departure, including loans for those in need. Since September 27, the U.S. has secured over 4,000 airplane seats for American citizens, lawful permanent residents, and their families wishing to exit Lebanon.
Jean-Pierre highlighted that seats are available on daily commercial flights still operating out of Beirut, with additional flights organized specifically for US citizens and their immediate family members. “As long as the Beirut airport remains open, we will continue to make more airplane seats available daily,” she assured.
The US Embassy in Beirut is also open to assist Americans with emergency passports and other essential documentation. “We urge Americans to take advantage of these options,” Jean-Pierre emphasized.
While immediate safety measures are underway, she reiterated the importance of pursuing a diplomatic resolution for lasting stability along the Israel-Lebanon border. Referring to a recent 30-minute call between President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, Jean-Pierre noted that the conversation was both direct and productive. A detailed readout of their discussion will be provided soon.
Addressing concerns about the potential escalation of violence, Jean-Pierre made it clear: “We cannot and will not see Lebanon turn into another Gaza. That is not what we want to see.”
