U.S. Vice President JD Vance, speaking at the Republican Party convention wrapping up in Texas, joked in response to shouts from the crowd calling him the future 48th American president, urging people to think first about the midterm elections coming up in November.
“We have to take care of business this November. Then we’ll worry about what comes next,” Vance said at the convention.
During the vice president’s keynote speech at the convention, the audience chanted “JD — 48,” thereby calling on him to run as the Republican Party’s candidate in the next presidential election in 2028.
Donald Trump — the 45th and 47th president of the United States — said in early August that the time had not yet come to decide on the next Republican presidential candidate.
“It’s too early to think about that right now,” he told reporters at the White House, commenting at their request on reports by American media, according to which he had allegedly told Republican Party donors that they should prepare to support Vance’s candidacy.
At the same time, in May the American leader called the pairing of Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio an ideal team and potential Republican Party candidates in the 2028 election, but did not specify which of them would run for president and which for vice president.
The midterm elections will be held in the United States on November 3, 2026. They will determine the entire composition of the House of Representatives and part of the Senate. In addition, gubernatorial elections will take place in many states.
The next U.S. presidential election will take place in November 2028.
