Ahead of Oleshky evacuation, Russian and Ukrainian delegations meet in Belarus

Reuters. Ukrainian human rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets and a representative of the Office of the Russian human rights commissioner Igor Kashin met in Gomel airport in Belarus on Thursday (October 29).

The meeting was a part of relief mission aimed at providing aid and evacuation of civilians facing humanitarian disaster from a front-line town of Oleshky in Ukraine’e Kherson region claimed by Russia.

Soon after meeting, Russian and Ukrainian delegations departed from Gomel.

Belarus state news agency Belta released videos showing meeting between Lubinets and Kashin and their departure onboard of a Russian aircraft. The agency described the air of meeting as ‘positive’.

The humanitarian mission was made possible due to truce truce, brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump with the involvement of Pope Leo. The truce applies to the town and surrounding areas, including the wider Kherson region, which has suffered years of near-daily drone and artillery attacks.

Neither Ukraine nor Russia has reported any violations so far of the US-brokered six-day ceasefire, which came into effect early on Tuesday (October 27) to allow evacuations and aid deliveries to Oleshky, where trapped residents have faced regular shelling and severe shortages of food and medicine with Moscow and Kyiv blaming each other for the situation.
