Hungarian PM Orbán rallies citizens to oppose EU military plan

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has launched a petition campaign against a defense plan currently being discussed by European Union leaders, RBC-Ukraine reprots.

He announced the move on his Facebook page, warning of a “hot autumn” and saying Europe is rapidly approaching war. Orban noted that a few weeks ago in Copenhagen, Brussels had presented a military plan in which Europe would pay, Ukrainians would fight, and Russia would be exhausted.

He said that at the EU summit in Denmark’s capital in early October, he had made it clear that Hungary had not requested such a plan. Following the summit, Orbán claimed, a campaign was launched against Hungary, including accusations of espionage, fake news scandals, and legal manipulations.

Orbán stressed that Hungary could not simply remain passive and that the signature drive was meant to show that the Hungarian people do not want war. He said the campaign would reach every city and village, calling on all peace-loving Hungarians to participate.

He later shared several photos from the Pesterzsébet farmers market, including one showing him signing the petition “against EU military plans.”

The petition follows Orbán’s earlier statements. On October 10, he claimed that Ukrainian intelligence was allegedly spying on Hungarians and had infiltrated the opposition Tisza Party, which he described as “pro-Ukrainian.”

The day before, media reports published an investigation suggesting that Hungary had spent years spying on EU structures and had tried to recruit EU officials to advance its own interests.
