Principles of equality, solidarity, and partnership should contribute to international efforts aimed at conservation of biodiversity: Berdimuhamedov

The loss of biodiversity, climate change, desertification, and land degradation are interconnected challenges that directly affect environmental security and countries’ development, Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov said at the COP17 Leaders’ Summit in Yerevan.

Berdimuhamedov emphasized the importance of long-term and effective cooperation among countries in biodiversity conservation.

“We believe it is necessary to strengthen international support for climate and environmental financial products by fostering the development of digital technologies and the creation of sustainable infrastructure capable of withstanding the impacts of climate change. At the same time, the principles of equity, solidarity, and partnership should guide international efforts aimed at biodiversity conservation. Multilateral cooperation mechanisms—including platforms established specifically for collaboration—should enable states to pool their knowledge, expertise, and capacities in pursuit of shared environmental goals,” Serdar Berdimuhamedov stated.

He is confident that the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity will serve as a catalyst for fulfilling commitments and ensuring international cooperation.

“Our objectives include developing a national system of specially protected areas, environmental monitoring, and the conservation of endangered animal and plant species. An important tool for implementing biodiversity conservation efforts in Turkmenistan is the national strategy developed for 2026–2035. First and foremost, we aim to promote regional cooperation and preserve transboundary systems. At the same time, I emphasize the importance of making full use of the potential of the United Nations. We also pay particular attention to cooperation with UNESCO,” Serdar Berdimuhamedov said.

The Turkmen leader added that ensuring access to financial resources and applying modern technologies are particularly important for biodiversity conservation.
