Kremlin admits tensions in Russia-Azerbaijan relations

The Kremlin said on Monday, July 21, that Russia-Azerbaijan relations are currently going through a challenging phase, but Moscow remains hopeful for improvement as the two countries share common interests.

“Sometimes it happens that difficult periods occur in relations between two countries. Now is one of those periods. We hope that this period will pass. We believe that cooperation between the two countries brings mutual benefits,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Tensions between Russia and Azerbaijan have been simmering for months. Relations worsened after the downing of an Azerbaijani passenger plane over Grozny in late 2024.

The situation escalated after several Azerbaijanis were detained in Yekaterinburg in June in connection with an unsolved murder case. Two of those held died after being detained and several others suffered injuries.

Baku conducted an operation in the office of the Russia-sponsored ‘Sputnik Azerbaijan’ news agency on June 30. According to Azerbaijan’s Interior Ministry, a probe was launched into the activities of the agency.
