Military conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan is not on the agenda: Hajiyev

Military confrontation or escalation between Armenia and Azerbaijan is not on the agenda, Hikmat Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan said in an interview with the German newspaper Berliner Zeitung.

According to Hajiyev, efforts are currently underway to sign a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia:

“Sometimes countries sign peace agreements on paper, but there is no real peace. In the South Caucasus, it’s the opposite; there is real peace. Military confrontation or escalation between Armenia and Azerbaijan is not on the agenda. Some disputed points remain, which is completely normal. That’s why we have diplomacy and dialogue.”

Commenting on the talks between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Abu Dhabi, Hajiyev said the meeting was constructive.

“It is good that the entire peace process is now in our hands. Only Armenia and Azerbaijan are making decisions, not Russia, not the European Union, not the United States. Only Armenians and Azerbaijanis were present in the room. We had a civilized dialogue, although we do not yet have diplomatic relations,” the official explained.

At the same time, Hajiyev once again insisted that the Minsk Group should be dissolved. He also accused Armenia of allegedly having territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

Hajiyev also touched upon the American proposal on regional communications, emphasizing that this is Armenia’s internal affair.

Referring to Moscow-Baku contacts, Hajiyev noted that there have been no fundamental changes in bilateral relations, but in recent months there have been certain misunderstandings and growing tensions. He called on Russia to take responsibility for the downing of the AZAL plane.
