U.S. President Donald Trump urged agreement acceptance, stating that whether a ceasefire agreement for the Ukraine war is possible depends on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Trump emphasized again in an exclusive interview with Fox News shortly after the U.S.-Russia summit held in Anchorage, Alaska, that “it depends on Zelensky to finalize the agreement,” adding, “Ukraine has to agree to the ceasefire conditions discussed by both sides.” Although the main issue of the summit was the end of the war between Russia and Ukraine, which has continued for 3 years and 6 months, the two leaders did not reach agreement on this matter.
When asked what advice he would give to Zelensky, Trump replied, “to make an agreement.” Earlier, before the U.S.-Russia summit, Trump warned that if Russia does not agree to the deal, there would be “serious consequences” for China, but he took a more cautious stance on measures such as imposing tariffs on major trading partners of Russia after the summit, saying, “Because of what happened today, there is no need to think about that right now,” and that “we could review it in 2 to 3 weeks, but not at the moment.”
He also mentioned the possibility of future follow-up meetings with himself, Zelensky, and Putin, claiming, “There is a significant chance of reaching an agreement.” This has led to speculation that rather than increasing pressure on Russia, the focus is on urging Ukraine to soften its existing position.
Trump rated the summit as “10 out of 10” and remarked that “the conversation with President Putin was warm.”
