We will be able to form a final idea of the practical functioning of this transport route when we get familiarized with the specific details of this project; this has not happened yet. Maria Zakharova, Spokesperson of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated this during a press briefing Friday and commenting on Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk’s statement that Russian has an understanding of the ‘Trump Route’, as well as the contradictory statements by the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan on this matter.
Zakharova recalled that in accordance with an international agreement, Russian border guards ensure the protection of the borders where the abovementioned route will pass.
“Numerous important agreements have been reached within the framework of the trilateral working group, co-chaired by the deputy prime ministers of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia, on the unblocking of transport and economic communications [in the South Caucasus]. They [i.e. the aforesaid agreements] have retained their relevance. Therefore, we hope to continue the productive dialogue with the Armenian side on these and other topics,” Zakharova said.
